Actor in a Leading Role

  • Javier Bardem in “Biutiful”
  • Jeff Bridges in “True Grit”
  • Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network”
  • Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech”
  • James Franco in “127 Hours”

Though I think Jesse Eisenberg was great, I’m going with Colin Firth.

Actor in a Supporting Role

  • Christian Bale in “The Fighter”
  • John Hawkes in “Winter’s Bone”
  • Jeremy Renner in “The Town”
  • Mark Ruffalo in “The Kids Are All Right”
  • Geoffrey Rush in “The King’s Speech”
This award has Christian Bale’s name all over it.  He was terrific.  Even though Jeremy is pretty darn hot.

Actress in a Leading Role

  • Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right”
  • Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole”
  • Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter’s Bone”
  • Natalie Portman in “Black Swan”
  • Michelle Williams in “Blue Valentine”

Jennifer Lawrence was fabulous as was Winter’s Bone, but I think it’s Annette Bening’s year.  Everyone is  crazy about Natalie Portman, me too, but she has a long career ahead of her.  Annette has proved her true grit.

Actress in a Supporting Role

  • Amy Adams in “The Fighter”
  • Helena Bonham Carter in “The King’s Speech”
  • Melissa Leo in “The Fighter”
  • Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit”
  • Jacki Weaver in “Animal Kingdom”

As much as I loved Hailee Steinfeld, I don’t think it’s fair to give this award to a child.  I’m going with Melissa Leo in The Fighter.

Directing

  • “Black Swan” Darren Aronofsky
  • “The Fighter” David O. Russell
  • “The King’s Speech” Tom Hooper
  • “The Social Network” David Fincher
  • “True Grit” Joel Coen and Ethan Coen

Going to vote for my buddy Darren on this one.  Loved this film!

Documentary (Feature)

  • “Exit through the Gift Shop” Banksy and Jaimie D’Cruz
  • “Gasland” Josh Fox and Trish Adlesic
  • “Inside Job” Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs
  • “Restrepo” Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger
  • “Waste Land” Lucy Walker and Angus Aynsley
Have to go for the beautiful film Waste Land.  I’m really hoping Lucy Walker wears a trash bag gown.  Could be incredible.  But that’s also how I (alone) felt about the swan dress.
I will also add that I did LOVE Exit Through the Gift Shop.  The prospect of Banksy being in LA for the show is super exciting, assuming he’ll show.  What street art will he make?  Can’t wait to find out.

If you had told me at the height of my Industrial Music phase that Trent Reznor would get nominated for an Oscar, I would have marveled in disbelief.  But he has!!!  And it was one of the best scores I’ve ever heard!  Genius.

Oh, too many choices!  I don’t mind having 10 nominees, but I don’t think all 10 of these are Oscar quality.  I’m going with The King’s Speech but guessing that Toy Story 3 has a good chance.  It’s even Quentin Tarantino’s favorite film of the year.

Will have to get behind Aaron on this one.  It was probably the best script anyone could have written about Facebook.  But I do think 127 Hours should get an honorable mention.
